I guess that depends on would contents in that usr folder intended to be accessed directly. for example
gimp (ported from linux) do this
C:\Documents and Settings\bill\.gimp-2.2

while most (not all) other window application do this
C:\Documents and Settings\bill\Application Data\IrfanView

both of them are intended to be hidden.

some window applications do this albeit the file are not intended for modification directly by users.
C:\Documents and Settings\bill\My Documents\STDocViewer

Following this pattern,
1. if usr must be hidden
C:\Documents and Settings\bill\.j602-user

C:\Documents and Settings\bill\Application Data\j602-user

/home/bill/.j602-user

2. otherwise my document is also a candidate and more accessible as Ric said.

C:\Documents and Settings\bill\My Documents\j602-user
/home/bill/j602-user

I really like the improved installed layout in j602bbeta.
Despite that I still have some suggestions!
On XP the user folder is currently:
\Documents and Settings\<username>\j602-user
This location is not very accessible (hard to navigate to from Open &
Save dialogs) and other apps store their user documents in "My
Documents".
(2!:5 'USERPROFILE'),'\My Documents'

I'm aware that in Vista the <username> folder is a lot more accessible
than in XP, but think even there (not having used Vista much) that the
"Documents" folder is the most appropriate place for the "J602-user"
folder.

The problem this would introduce is how to detect Vista vs XP (and
therefore Documents vs. My Documents) in profile.ijs. Then there are
the use cases of usb installations and users who relocate their
Documents folders.

Perhaps one way to try and get around some of these issues is to enable
the user to choose to change the default destination of "J602-user"
(hom) during installation (in the same way as the user can choose the
install folder). That would require the profile.ijs to be edited by the
installer to set "hom" (not sure how feasible this is), but would also
solve the issue of usb installations.

Subject: [Jbeta] j602bbeta

See www.jsoftware.com Beta page for bbetas for Windows32, Linux32, Mac Intel, and Mac Powerpc.

The bbeta is a cleanup of the installer packaging and does not include a new J Engine or scripts.

J32 Windows no longer requires vcredist. J64 Windows (not yet available) will require vcredist.

Linux installer is a tar.gz file.

Mac installer is a disk images.

There are new J icons. The icons in the various formats, colors, and sizes have been provided by Ric Sherlock. There will probably be one more iteration with the Windows icons to make the J a tad smaller and move it up and to the right so that it looks better with the link arrow.

Lab Application Distribution - Installer has been reworked to reflect the new platform specific J installers. Please take a look. It is interesting that the Mac has moved from most awkward to most elegant.

With luck the installer issues are resolved with this beta and we can then move along to engine and script issues.
