I believe the current j602bbeta addresses your concerns.

On any platform you can easily install j602 anywhere you want. Or move the J directory anywhere you want at any time.

Each user gets their own j602-user folder in their HOME directory for user, temp, and config files.

All platforms except for XP have a nice system defined HOME of the form /users/username. The XP HOME works just fine but it seems awkward as it C:/My Documents/username.

Users who are not happy with the default HOME\j602-user folder can easily make a documented change to profile.ijs to get the folder of their choice.

Something like Don's proposal would be welcome to academics who want a
simple way to install J for the use of students.

I was able to use J in a Windows lab by having it installed on every
machine in the lab, but getting J to work in a Linux lab was beyond my
ability to explain -- there was no option to install it on every
machine, only on a system serving the lab machines.

There was also at the time a problem getting J to print on our Linux
system, but that was a secondary issue.

The important word above is "simple", and the important application is
education.

 I
suggested a modification to profile.ijs that would allow it to support
multiple users, that is, move the location of user and temp without
requiring any modification to profile.ijs. Simply put a copy of
profile.ijsin the desired directory to contain the alternate user's
 user and temp
directories. When run by J as the first script to load, those directories
become the user and temp directories no matter where the J installation
directories reside. However, if it is run in the J installation directory, it works exactly as the current profile.ijs now does. The reason I thought this was important to do is that the profile.ijs could be used without any
 changes to support multiple users.

I have not seen any response to that request yet. It seems to me that it
should solve the problems discussed in this thread.
