Try a recent Winamp version if you haven't and I think you get the
picture. It's very similar to iTunes with a huge difference, in iTunes
Apple decides everything but with Winamp you have full control on which
lists you want and how you want the content to be filtered.
I believe it's not about having a single list, it's about having a
number of lists where you can select stuff in one list and the
following lists will display the matching results, more or less exactly
how iTunes work. You can display results as albums, tracks or both (in
two separate lists).
Winamp has the smart view feature which can be comparable with the
Multi Library/Custom Browse plugins, the difference is just that the
configuration is a lot easier and user friendly in Winamp. This makes
it possible for you to setup multiple views according to your needs, in
the similar way as Multi Library/Custom Browse plugins work but Winamp
has a more user friendly configuration.
I think something similar to Winamp would be great in SBS web inteface
but it won't work with the current HTML/Javascript technology. To make
it fast enough something else is required, either a Java applet, Flash
client or a standalone rich client.
The chance that Logitech would implement something like this about 0%,
there is no economical interest for them to make something like this,
it's too much work and a too big change. I'm afraid we are going to
have to rely on third parties for something like this, but we are
getting pretty used to that so it's not a big issue IMHO. It's better
that Logitech focus on the core server with the limited number of
resources they have access to.
I'm still not sure how to implement this on the Controller/Radio
interfaces in a user friendly way without something similar to the
current solution with menus. The situation gets even worse on the
single line displays of Classic/Boom/Transporter. The Winamp interface
is clearly optimized to be used on a computer screen. The Squeezebox
user interfaces might be able to use the same concept but it needs to
look completely different compared to the web interface. In the
Squeezebox interfaces you really only have screen space for a single
list at the time.
I think something similar to the "Tags" menu in Custom Browse is the
way to do it but probably with some adjustments or maybe just a way to
predefine hierarchies. When you think about it the "Tags" menu in
Custom Browse is kind of similar, it makes it possible to filter the
result in any order you want and then select to view "Matching albums"
or "Matching songs". The "Matching albums"/"Matching songs" entries
doesn't even have to be selected when you have filtered the result a
bit the result will be displayed directly.
Anyway, maybe we should switch thread if we want to continue this
discussion as it has nothing to do with various artists/compilation
logic in SBS.

Everything is still crammed into a single screen, it would definitely
be unusable for my parents or someone else that isn't used to working a
lot with computers. It's possible to hide a lot of stuff if you like to,
it's just that the default is to show everything on a single screen.
