Cons:

The big drawback is #4 above. Without adding that explicit ALBUMARTIST
to keep compilations separate from other albums and to suppress
track-artists, you end up with something of a mess.

indeed. this is why i advocate using AA tags on everything b/c most
apps/devices work better with it. its the best strategy for broad
universal behavior.

assigning AA (or comp) tags to comps (and everything else) is the
marketplace de facto standard, (like it or not).

And in Squeezebox Server, where you want to be able to sort albums by
artist name, I'm not sure what you'd do with compilation albums with no
ALBUMARTIST. All you could do is use one of the track artists for
sorting, which is not good.

i don't follow you here. you have a variety of choices:

1. use the VA detection logic
2. assign a comp tag
3. assign a AA tag
4. do nothing and let the album appear under each artist on the album
(assuming they ever let you turn off the VA detect logic)

also note that in SBS, if you have a comp with an AA tag, you can just
assign a comp tag too to over-ride if u feel the need.

It's the automatic detection of compilation albums by Squeezebox Server
that lets it function without _any_ additional tagging beyond the
standard artist, album, title and track. No need for ALBUMARTIST or
COMPILATION tags at all.

yes, for the tiny minority who don't have AA or comp tags on stuff, they
can choose to use the SBS VA detection logic, esp if thats the only place
they use their files.

but even they have to use AA tags to "de-comp" something thats isn't
wanted or properly placed in the VA category.
