Well, I think Album Artist AND Compilation come hand in hand. Compilation=1
isn't just a plus, it's equally important. In fact I'd say if anything
Compilation=1 is the important bit, and the fact that an album artist is set is
a plus. i.e. it would work equally well if an album ended up with
Compilation=1 and no Album Artist. Any album that has Compilation=1 ends up
being listed within the container that can be named anything you like, but by
default called "Various Artists".

The one thing that I think would make most sense would be for a Browse
Compilations that only shows a list of albums with Compilation=1, and thus
Browse Artists would not need the special container for "Various Artists".
This would probably speed up Browse Artists, as it would need less special
logic to handle Various Artists.

>The main reason to have this logic is to avoid the need to have

The reason for the logic is to keep songs grouped to the same album. The way
that it achieves it by making the album a compilation/setting album artist;
that's not the underlying reason.

No, the Browse Artists list is not the same, in that it can be configured to
contain different types of artists. i.e. you can list/hide Band/Orchestra,
Composers and Conductors. You can show all artists, or hide single-track
artists.

The SBS interfaces are based around albums. You browse hierarchies to get to a
collection of albums. Browse Artists is one of these - choose an artist to see
their albums. I think it's quite unusual for a user to want to see a list of
all artists, because the list can become too long. You can still access albums
that a track-only artist appears on by searching for the artist name, or
navigating to the artist from a song that he contributes on, but it's not
normal for a user to need to see all artists. Not many apps provide an All
Artists.

I think providing it via Custom Browse is fine - I found it straightforward to
create an All Artists list.
