I think this is because all compilations are shown under the artist name used 
to represent compilations.  When you get into "Various Artists" (the default 
name for compilations), the actual album artist name would be displayed.  This 
is because "Various Artists" isn't really an artist name, but a placeholder 
that means "Compilations go here".

However, I believe that compilations with an alternative album artist tag would 
be displayed within an artist if you had normal albums in your collection by 
that artist.  e.g. if you set COMPILATION=1 and ALBUMARTIST=The Beatles for a 
tribute album, that album would then be listed with other normal albums by The 
Beatles.

Are you sure?  I don't think I'm seeing this.  I think I have added 
COMPILATION=1 to all of my compilation albums, rather than auto-detect 
compilations as I sometimes load them into iTunes.  Maybe this makes a 
difference?
