Sure. And if the Album you are looking for isn't in the first list you
back out and go to the second one. And the 3rd. And then it's between
one and 5 clicks more. I said "up to".

With the too much exact and slow search in LMS: no. It is if you know
exactly what you are looking for but then I'd not go through artists but
Albums, faster. But if you know that you are looking for an album of
which you almost know the name and you know the artist, then an
alphabetical list you can quickly scroll through an index is a fast
choice.
I experience it every day right now since I started to use the new menus
which don't have the index.

Sure, it won't work in all cases (e.g. if you only remember a keyword)
but it's still a decent ordering criterion.

I know, a lot of people do, but the list looks really arbitrary then
especially since my experience is that of albums that are automatically
tagged (again, that's what probably >90% of all users have) some 50% or
so lack any release year information

Yes, but for those who don't this whole discussion is moot anyhow, isn't
it?

I mean, we can discuss for another year about what the best way to sort
three albums into a category is for sure :P

No space. Where do you want to place all these indices on a phone
screen? Also: too confusing, what are all these indices about?
No, seriously, at this complexity, we are discussing something here that
will in the end be used by 5 people. At max. All others will just throw
it out of the window.

Configuration options are already something for only 5% of all users.
Tell me what the option is that 90% of all users want, I'm going to
ignore the others.
We are not only talking about the web interface here (which is another
thing most Squeezebox users don't use; heck, almost half of the iPeng
users I talk to don't even know about it when I mention it).

That's the problem: I can do so in the few menus iPeng creates itself
and iPeng is probably the only App doing this at all.
All other Apps (and menus) will simply get something that looks
incredibly unsorted to most users.

The sort options are for the web interface, not the native interface or
controllers. There's a sort option for SqueezePlay as well but it
doesn't have the same options as the web interface. And I believe it
only affects the top level menu.
