That depends what you mean with a status bar. My idea was to use either the bottom bar or the light gradient, not both. > The HIG refer to a "bottom bar" > > http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGWindows/XHIGWindows.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20000961-TP9 Which they still did not get right when it comes to size and placement of controls. Have you seen any Apple app that actually uses the recommended height of 22px? I also think that one does not make much sense because it's too small for a button/segmentedcontrol of the proper bezel style and size. > which is supposed to have the same style as the toolbar. You can add/remove it as a whole of course, but not just in the middle as currently in BD. > I experimented with this a while ago, and it's not bad; one > advantage is that you can use standard controls, and avoid the > fiddly parts of view hiding. > <Screen shot 2009-11-01 at 7.19.48 AM.png> The problem here is that you don't need to hide the views because you removed the segmented control in the middle. With it, we should probably have to hide the buttons on the left when that pane is collapsed. Or perhaps not allow this pane to collapse. Or alternatively, just leave them and shift the middle segmentedcontrol sufficiently. But you need to move the segmented control in the central part with the leftmost divider, because they are supposed to align, as in Address Book. > Are there any Apple apps that have the Mail/Preview gradient > extending across the entire window? And what about when we want to keep the status message as well as all four buttons/controls?
