Actually, if I had followed the HIG they would be even more squashed.  
Instead, I followed Apple's own apps,  because I'm convinced the HIG  
is wrong. So in my interpretation the layout of the buttons is  
according to Apple's style. if you don't like this style, that would  
be towards Apple, they decided not to follow our lead.

As for the buttons in the middle, unlike the side bar you cannot  
completely hide the lower preview, you can only collapse it. the  
divider always stays visible. As it's also not collapsed in the  
direction of the buttons, it would look very odd to me to hide those  
buttons.
