I think ATC should plan a myriad of routes in the form of multiple radii into the center of MSN. Start with one radius, and tell the residents in the path of the proposed line that unless they use less, they get the line. The people will respond by using less. Then move on to Proposed Route B. Wield the same threat. Move on to Proposed Route 3. And so on until everyone in the city of Madison uses 1/3 the electricity they currently (pun intended) use. We are using less than 1/4 the Wisconsin average with off-the-shelf products and it didn't cost all that much. Ya just gotta be HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHRD!!!!!!!!!!!!

A little motivation goes a long way. Good ol' self interest can be good for the environment: Combine green pricing to appeal to the greedy bastard in all of us and the threat of a power line in our yard to appeal to the NIMBY in all of us. Greed + NIMBY = Better environment for us all.

Where's Adam Smith when I need him?!

Yes, a whole network of community groups that has sprung up in opposition to the project is pushing just that. But ATC is in the business of constructing power lines, and "when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

Mike (and anyone else interested), read today's "Citizen" article in _Isthmus_ for a 10,000-foot view of what's wrong with the "study" that "proves" the need for this line. It's written by a retired insider.

Um, has anyone considered using *less* electricity as an option for
obviating the need for any route?

That is to say, have any of the utilities actually implemented a
"green pricing" scheme to reward those doing the right thing and
 penalizing the gluttons?
