Most people use the 'startx' to load X, which *tries* to get the
correct values to pass to xinit. My system seems to have it right,
and I didn't need to make it executable.
Try just running 'xinit'. If you have an .xinitrc in your $HOME, it
will default to it, and if it doesn't all you'll see is an xterm.
