Well I'll be a monkey's grey-haired gap-toothed uncle,
that worked!

I must have been imagining things when I said that I
didn't use a graphical login and tried it.  Either
that or, since I always use startx, it was looking for
.xsession, as someone else suggested.

Regardless, I will always make a symbolic link to
.xinitrc.
