Now this GM Watch release confirms that the recent drug trial fiasco involved a genetically engineered drug. Already the medical scientists are trying to explain everything away and crying that this incident should not affect further research. Such cover ups should not be allowed. What of "informed assent"? Were the subjects aware that they were being administered GE drugs? In India we have opened the floodgates by allowing drug MNCs to conduct trials. This is unpardonable. The poor and illiterate and also the educated public rarely question what the doctor prescribes. Drug reactions are never probed. This lacunae has been pointed out by an NRI doctor who has lost his wife to the carelessness of Indian doctors. He has now sued the doctors and the concerned hospital for a whopping sum of Rs. 77.80 Crores. His interview on NDTV was immensely shocking as it revealed the total lack of control that exists here. Regards, Jagannath. Subject: GMW: GM medicine from human/mouse hybrid gene From: "GM WATCH" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 13:46:24 GMT GM WATCH daily http://www.gmwatch.org --- "It is possible that the severe symptoms the six men are experiencing are unanticipated side effects of the genetic engineering process, and this needs to be fully explored," --- GE medicine derived from human/mouse hybrid gene Press release, 22 March 2006 Green MP Sue Kedgley is calling for assurances that no drug trials involving GE medicines are being carried out in New Zealand without participants being informed that the drug is genetically engineered. Her call follows confirmation that the medicine (TGN1412) that has left six men in London seriously ill, including a New Zealander, was genetically engineered and is derived from a human/mouse hybrid gene. Professor Peter Wills of Auckland University has confirmed this after searching the original patents that were granted for this medicine. Ms Kedgley says trials involving genetically engineered medicines are inherently more risky than other drug trials because of the possibility that unintended side effects could occur. "It is possible that the severe symptoms the six men are experiencing are unanticipated side effects of the genetic engineering process, and this needs to be fully explored," she says. "In the meantime it is essential that all participants in drug trials are informed whenever genetically engineered medicines are involved, so that volunteers are aware of the increased risk. I am seeking government assurance that this is the case." Ms Kedgley says it is also important that all medicines which are derived from a genetically engineered process are labelled as such. "Consumers have a right to know when medicines they are taking are derived from GE, just as they are entitled to know whether food contains GE ingredients in it or not." Patients aren't unhappy just because health care costs too much (though they would certainly like it to be more affordable). Rather, people sense a malaise within the system that has eroded the respect they feel patients deserve. I noticed that business jargon was becoming commonplace. "Patients" began to disappear. They were replaced by "consumers." They eventually became "customers." This may seem a trivial matter, but it is not. You treat "patients" as if they were members of your family. You talk to them. You comfort them. You take time to explain to them what the future may hold in store. Sometimes, that future will be bleak. But you assure them you will be there to help them face it. You treat "customers" quite differently. Customers are in your place of business to purchase health care. You complete the transaction such a relationship suggests: health care for money. And then they aren't your customers any more. Taken a step further, you can make the case that the less time you spend with your customers, the better your bottom line will be. This gets everyone's attention. Hormone horror Your daughter may turn out to be an `unrealised male' trapped in a female body, no thanks to environmental pollution. The issue is being hotly debated by medical experts. JOSEPH MASILAMANY delivers the chilling details in plain tabloid language. http://www.sun2surf.com/article.cfm?id=13510 Excerpt: Call them "unrealised males" or "feminised males", they are the most striking example of what could go wrong when messages from hormones that guide development during crucial stages of foetal formation are "blocked" or "mimicked" by imposters. The opposite may also happen with an "unrealised female" ensconced in a male body. If anything "meddles" with testosterone or an associated hormone, the foetus will develop a clitoris and other external female genitals. In less extreme examples of "disruption", males may be born with ambiguous genitals or abnormally small penises and undescended testicles. For all the body systems to develop normally in a foetus, it must get the right hormonal message in the right dose, to the right place, at the right time. In fact, the money spent on the river has gone astray and the efforts to keep the Ganga pollution-free have come to naught as it absorbs 260 mld sewage daily. Besides, the residential colonies and the slums situated near the river, the tanneries are polluting the river. The plants to treat the chromium-infested water of tanneries are also not functioning properly because of poor maintenance. Moreover, despite the best efforts, the authorities could not prevent the direct release of water from 20 sewers into the river. According to a report prepared by the Central Pollution Control Board, out of the total contaminated water being released into the Ganga, three-fourth is sewage water. Apart from this, one-fourth of the water discharged by the tanneries and other industries is highly contaminated. The report further said that the maximum discharge of industrial water, directly into the Ganga, takes place in the Kanpur City, and Kolkata stands next. After the publication of this report, the project Ganga Action Plan was prepared but till date, it could not be fully implemented. Even today, the water from various sewage lines is directly going into the Ganga. Water from drains at Police Line and District Jail is being directly discharged into Ganga. The septic tanks of the Kayhora and Parampurwa drains is overflowing. The sewage lines of Jageshwar, Ranighat, Parmat and Mayor Mill drains are choked. The tapping of Sisamau drain is proposed under the phase II of the Ganga Action plan. The officials associated with the Ganga Action Plan admit that treatment plants set up for treating the contaminated water of tanneries is not working properly. A senior official of the Ganga Action Plan, on condition of anonymity, said that the tanneries are discharging contaminated water into the river. He also said that the efforts to stop the release of polluted water from the residential area situated near the river into the Ganga was yet to be made.
