Then there is the fear of biopiracy with U.S. multinationals having free access to India's genetic resources. The agreement might set the American model in place where following the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, even publicly funded research in U.S. universities and institutes is patented and licensed out for commercial development to companies such as Monsanto. Not surprisingly then, the weekly newsletter of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) wrote in protest, "Today's gene revolution depends almost entirely on private domain science. If we harness Indian scientific research to the U.S., then it is allowing the complete dominance of companies such as Monsanto on Indian agriculture. By Patenting and Branding Seeds, they will openly exploit Indian agriculture. India will be coerced into production of raw materials for the American MNCs and in turn these multinationals will sell their branded end products through misleading advertisements and catchy slogans, labeling their products efficacious, hygienic and safe from health point of view." Krishna Bir Chaudhary, leader of Bharat Krishak Samaj, a farmers' organization in India in an opinion editorial wrote, "The Indo-U.S. agreement on agriculture will cast a demonizing spell over the country and is bound to cause large-scale plunder of the agro-society and definitely tend to capitalize on our living, life pattern, culture and social norms. Meeting minutes of Vanaras chapter: Dear friends, We all know that one of the major tasks taken up by the volunteers of Bharat Uday Mission is to extend value based and essential education to all our underprivileged youger brothers and sisters. So recognising the full importance of this initiative, VARANASI CHAPTER has decided to contribute in this field. In order to find out like minded people, Chapter Coordinator met the volunteers of "KASHI UTKARSH". This important meeting was arranged by Primly jee. Details:- 1) KASHI UTKARSH initiative was taken up some ITBHU students around 8 to 9 years back. 2) These volunteers are running two schools for underprivileged children at Lahartara and at Suswahi respectively. 3) They are educating these children in the best possible manner giving personal attention to each child. 4) Nine to ten of these younger kids have been selected for "NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA". 5) Classes are held in the premises of government school. Even they have appointed a teacher for these children, whose salary is managed by the donations given by the ITBHU students. 6) Some of the pass-outs of ITBHU who are now settled, have decided to adopt some of these children. And many others are volunteering for this. Conclusion: 1) We have decided to work together. 2) If all the volunteers of KASHI UTKARSH agreed then there can be a merger of the two. 3) Varanasi chapter has ensured them of all possible help. Friends, Yesterday started out as another ordirinary day, our plans were going as planned. We left for the hospital after noon to get some pictures in order to finalize our presentation. What happened next changed my outlook on life. Hearing and knowing is a lot lot different from seeing things first hand. After we were nearly done with our work, we headed out towards the patients attendants waiting area (a series of garages with the shutters open.. with absolutely no furniture in there except the dirty stone floor. Guess as the hospital has no ambulances, this is the best way the authorities found to utilize this structure ) there we saw a man, an old man, lying half delirious, lying in what was his own excreta, lying in pain and agony, mumbling... not having the energy to even cry out.... lying barely 15 meters away from the main enterance to the hospital, lying in sight of the guards, yet... still lying there. We immediately raised an alarm.. tried to get him admitted, it was an ordeal, even after we said we were from the press. It took us half an hour at least to get a stretcher (none are available, the casualty section has just 4.... and for every patient admitted in this section spends an average 1-2 hrs on it while his preliminart tests are done, if done at all) We got him to the emergency section.... there we were told he was diabetic, had had an operation performed on him recently and had been discharged after that, in the state he was. Whats more is that he when had noticd something wrong had come to the hospital(5 days ago) but as some1 had robbed his money(Rs400) he couldn't get himself admitted.. he confessed that the guards had indeed kicked him out... refusing him admission everyday.... If he had been admitted 5 days back, He could have LIVED. Right now he has gangerene in his leg... which is very severe. He cannot be operated as he can't stand the opoeration without anesthesia... nor can he stand the anesthesia..... thought 5 days back, it would have been different. We tried our best, got him admitted, had some scans done, but the diagnosis held. We were told to shift him to an old age home as that was the only way he could spend the last few months of his life in peace. We were told to arrange for his to be shifted by (am the next day.. else he would have to be thrown out again. We immediately tried to locate some old age homes...(thank you Tejaswi and Sriram.... your immediate support is really appreciated) we planned to shift him to an old age home at Kukatpally today.. BUT.. yes there is a but. Today morning we were told that the person was discharged in the night... the official version is that some1 came for him.. this after he told us he had no one. Here, my guess is as good as yours.. i suspect he was thrown in some old gutter.... thrown as the authorities found him to be a burden.. a shame to their image... And te sad part is that there is nothign more we can do for the poor person... All that we can do.. and something that i ask all of you to do... is pray. Yes, this incident changed my life.... I thank everyone there.... all who did their best to help him... help him while grippling with 'life' and its harsh realities. Thank you rakesh, Deepti, Harvinder, Niranjan and Tanvir. All this made me realize the value of what we plan to do. No our aim in the OGH project is not to help one individual. its to change the system so that no one has to suffer like this. We have some plans, some plans which we will discus with all of you when its possible to do so. Till then i request all the members of BM to come, join this project and help these people. we haeva sanitation drive planned here on the 20-21st of this month... we need all of you to help out... and get all your freinds, relatives.... just about everyone you can get to help out too. Yes the other schemes for improving education, employment must continue. We cant allow other part of the country to suffer. or Instead of having different schemes for education, employment, etc. We should make many committees with each committee for a particular region. These should cover whole of India. All the work of employment, education will done by a particular committee with having various subcommittees for them. Luminaries of that particular region from different streams should be appointed as they will know their region well. Yes we have state governments. But I feel this federal system should be changed in some way. This will need amendments in constitution. for eg, the committees which I am talking about should be directly under Central Government. They will develop policies for that particular region by consulting with state governments. The main role of state government will be to maintain law and order and maintaining the infrastructure and other small issues. But main issues of employment, education, health should be with central government. BY this I mean what should be taught or how more employment can be made should be decided by these committies and implementing them will be done by state governments. These committees will have to do work because the develoment of a region will be easily perceptible. Even a person who will come back to a particular region after 5 years will be able to tell whether development has taken place or not. But this is not the case when we take abstract topics and try to improve it all over India. I feel we should have a strong Centre for making country progress as a whole. Only after making the country strong economically , militrally we should think of giving powers to the panchayati raj system etc. Without making a strong country these things although good in theory always breed corruption. This idea which I talked about earlier will also be able to reduce wastage of manpower , money , because there will not be separate departments for health -- one by a state govn and one by a central govn. . All the learned person will give their inputs to the particular committee and hence there will be synergy. The thinking power will not get distributed between central govn and state govn. Moreover , friends this a simple solution, and I have learned in my life that simplest solution is the best solution. Think about Avagadro's hypothesis, I have read in our NCERT chemistry book that scientists also choose the simplest solution. A great Avagadro's law was actually the simplest solution for the problem of gases at that time and it was proved correct later on. So friends, the idea is this, moreover to implement it we will need people who are well versed with the constitution, other social and economic factors of the country. I will like to read your viewpoints on this. Moreover, PLEASE CAN ANY1 tell how we can give our ideas to the government.
