I liked the article which was reproduced in the quarterly news letter of the society for applied behavioral sciences, Here & Now: I have been looking for directions as I was becoming too lazy & fuzzy; the article fired me; I love a message meant for me / for us .. taking responsibility for what I/we/you love.. ; many more things, but this stays with me; if we are responsible for what we love to do or achieve or experience or see, how good it would be transforming me/us/all I am also fond of yet another recently found direction from Sirkali, the Town of the Boy_saint that god help us to do good things to people; he is with us The above two directions give me the strength and courage to me to act and look ahead without worrying much on ifs and buts.. So, Now I am on a project: If interested please read, otherwise please forgive me ( I have a habit of cross posting, please forgive me for that too, cross posting with the hope that would be useful to others): Sorry that I have not said anything on the connection: it is a dream, it is not altruism; it is more of professional egoism or simply professionalism; why not we do better than before/ever.. ; or, you may know my true intentions better than what I know myself! But, I pray, good things ought to happen ever before and after: Here and Now can put some input into BUM, or can join together, it is organization and it is basic behaviours of us & us; I have a request to Here & Now that we can plan one program at Kuthampakkam itself for villagers for a change, or for school leaving children, the leaders of future-now? A Preliminary proposal sent to an Ashoka Fellow Social Entrepreneur: Rationale: Kuthampakkam model village in Thiruvallur district in Tamilnadu has been provided with 100% Shelter (permanent structure) through cost effective technology through innovation and resources available locally enabled by an Ashoka Fellow. This innovation could not be easily translated into a sustainable model and carried to other villages either in the district or in the entire state for want of fund, innovators and volunteers with same commitment as that of the Ashoka Fellow. The Fellow feels that he could achieve 100% shelter through various sources of fund for his village. The case will be different when we plan to provide 100% shelter to other villagers as enough fund is not available. Even if we provide part funding through loans, the poor villagers will not be able to repay the loans as their savings or incomes are not sufficient to meet the ends. So, a model is to be evolved whereby it will be possible to provide shelter to all. GCT78, a civil society organization has evolved a model at experimental stage that it harnesses the skills of workers through human resources of retired and fresh engineers and volunteers by on-job training of the workers and producing to the market needs; on job training to enhance productivity to produce more with more income or more free time to work on their own houses; both fresh engineers and retired engineers demand less pay than the prime engineers, so working margins can be set low and open markets can be easily penetrated for more volume of work. Kuthampakkam is strategically located very close to Chennai Metro and lots of construction and industrial activities take place around this place; there are many engineering colleges located close to this place. Kuthampakkam is a best place to sell the skills of trained workers to the industry requirements and demands, and can bring good income to the workers who can then afford for a strong & happy home. This can be experimented with the successful innovations of the Fellow and the GCT78 skill training model, and with Institutional supports from all. The working Model Proposal: Kuthampakkam will be the center of activities 20 to 40 villages close to Kuthampakkam will be identified Colleges and industries will be identified Volunteers, fresh engineers, workers, will be identified from locals GCT78 or DDM Engineers (or any other suitable structure) will provide the consultancy / construction services to the near by industries, colleges, organizations, local and government organizations Take the above services and provide hands-on & on-job trainings to fresher and workers Form small men and women self help groups, network, provide other community services, savings, planning, health and sanitation, education etc Allow small groups evolve and plan for their house building and other activities Enable 100% shelter in selected 40 villages in two to three years period Self Introduction note on Purushothaman P: 25 years worked in construction industry as Civil engineer; last 5 years developed keen interest in Developmental Works; now, set with a fond Mission of working for poor people than to Corporate Houses Doing research on applying Popular Education to Empower Construction Workers to increase their productivity and safety; this I wish to carry on a sustainable model as above Recently involved in tsunami relief works under the joint initiative of CARE-INDIA and Gandhigram Rural Institute, and Training of Masons under ICA, Bhoomika and UNDP sponsorships I wish to spend rest of my life working for poor, still making my living/earnings DDM Engineers is a low profit sole proprietorship entity; DDM stands for Design, Development and Maintenance of Services We have a team engineers joined together as a CSO called GCT78 involved in training of workers and networking fresh and retired engineers, yet on another model. GCT78 stands for old students of Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, batch passed out in the year 1978. The net present asset of GCT78 is Rs. 5000/- as contribution from members and the Goodwill is at Rs. 3.0 Crores(completed three years, at one Crore for each year completed) --------------------------------- Talk is cheap.
