2 qustions for the list today-
What does anyone think the following car is worth?
Do any listers want it?

The car:
'81 320i, one owner (my mother in law, literally a little old lady from
California)
100,000 miles
Always garaged, always a bay area car, never an accident
Orig. light metallic grey paint, excellent condition
Has sunroof, pwr. brakes, AC, no pwr. steering-everything works
Orig. clutch

I know this isn't the most collectible BMW, on the other hand it is in
really fantastic condition. Car in in Sebastopol, CA.

Thanks in advance,
Eric Rayl

Hi Peter, I'm a bit confused by what you've posted. Assuming your nephew's
car is a U.S. model, it is either an '83 E21 320i (1.8 liter) or an '84 E30
318i. All U.S. E30s came with 14 inch wheels or larger. Assuming it is an
E30:

Yes, "is" suspension parts will fit, but you'll need the front strut tubes
from the "is". The 318i uses smaller diameter tubes.

Interior parts are a direct swap. Any 4x100 hub-centric wheel with the
right offset will fit, there are many applications. Check out the Tire
Rack's web site. The exhaust on the 318 uses a single pipe exhaust, while
the 325i/is uses a twin pipe exhaust. Custom matching the 2 pipe system to
a 318 would make an interesting custom exhaust project. Learn how to weld!

Have fun helping him with the new family project car.

My 15 year old nephew has succumbed to the same sickness we all have --
Bimmeritis. He has gone and spent every last dime he has saved over the
years on a 1983 BMW 318i. As this is as close as he could afford to his
uncle's M3 and 330i, he is pretty content.

That said, I want to help him out. The car is tired (almost by definition,
it is a 318i after all ;-), and needs work. I'm looking for low-cost hop-up
parts (read: free or very cheap) to improve the car for him. I'll be flying
up to their home in Oregon in the new year and would love to come bearing
goodies to help him install.

Some specific things I'd love to find for him:
- Shocks/springs/bars -- do 'is' parts fit?
- Interior (his is ragged and in need of replacing)
- Wheels -- anything better than the stock 13?s
- Exhaust

So, if you have any performance parts, maintenance items, or minor upgrades
collecting dust in the garage, let me know. You'll be helping me create yet
another BMW addict to join our fold.

Any help would be appreciated.

True.

"Obviously not a performance modification" is not your call according to
the SCCA. Remember, the SCCA classifies hundreds of cars for Solo-II.
Each has their own quirks and many owners of many cars would like to do
"don't blow up" type mods (ask 911 owners about timing chain
tensioners), but can't according to the rules. Not blowing up on course
is a performance enhancement if you consider finishing the course an
integral part of performance.

However, I'd ask what level of competition you plan on attending? If
it's local club autocross using SCCA rules, I'd simply tell other
competitors that the car has a few specific mods that make it illegal
for the class. Ask them if they care. In most cases, unless you're
beating them, no one will complain. If you start to win, they have the
option to ask you to run in the correct class. If you're running
national events, do not run it in stock. The car is either stock
according to the rules, or it's not. In this case, it's not.

> 2) it has a lightweight flywheel. this is obviously a performance mod, and
> definitely looks to be disallowed for F stock.

Yes, Street Prepared for the flywheel, ESP to be specific for the M5
(under the heading "Other Sedans over 3.0 liters not otherwise classified").

> 3) it has an aftermarket cat but factory downpipes and exhaust.

Since the car is more than 5 years old, aftermarket cats are ok in stock
(cars less than 5 years/50,000 miles must use OEM), but they must be "of
the same type and size and used in the same location as the original
equipment converter(s). This does not allow for a high performance
unit." If you used an aftermarket high flow cat, it's another Street
Prepared mod.

> So, what the heck category would that put me in ?

The problem is the crank hub. There is no allowance in Stock or SP for
this mod so both FS and ESP are out. If it's not specifically listed as
legal in the SCCA rule book, then it's illegal for that class. This
means you go all the way to Modified. I'm not sure what Mod class the M5
would fit, but it would be hopelessly outclassed whatever it is.

However, you can also run in Street Modified and that's probably what
I'd do. Pretty much all engine mods are legal in SM and so are your
other mods. You'd get killed at any national event in a lightly modified
M5, but at the local level SM is just a fun class for people who want to
run and have fun, but have a few illegal mods for stock or SP.

OK mighty minions of the automotive guild,

Why does GM put a grape scent in their 75W90 gear oil?
Specifically
it's a
"synthetic" gear oil that's called for in some of the
truck
differentials.
Unless it serves some purpose or it's an accidental
artifact of the
material itself, I don't see GM wasting money to add
it for no good
reason.

Formulated for vision impaired mechanics?

Actually, it seems like that would make for quick identification of the oil
*drained* from a diff, assuming there's any standardization of fruits, but
that's just a guess.

I did try googling "fruit scented lube" but most of the links were a litte

perhaps it's added to the factory fill (or service fill) only as a
way to differentiate between the original fill or fluids which
have been replaced later. sort of like BMW's "Lifetime"
fills for transmissions.

if there was a strict service interval on a particular diff
or trans, they could (attempt to) deny warranty if someone
had(n't) changed the fluids on the proper schedule.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Brad, nice job on the 5
speed conversion..http://www.fatdaddybmw.com/tranny/ what a big pile of
work, and your documentation on the website is great
too..Congratulations. That was a pretty major piece of wrenching..got the
grease out from under your nails yet..???

Ah youth and ambition.(I'm 43).I have a 91 325ic and it has a slushbox.. a
WORKING slushbox.. a very nice slushbox..

I can't seem to get the mojo to do a conversion.. maybe its the other
Bimmer, the truck, the speedboat, the plane, the kids, the wife's car, the
work..its so in the 'ain't broke category'.. but if there ever was a car
that needs a 5 speed....what with the M3 suspension..

My major projects this year to date;

Fixed all the rust , did the body work and repainted my 735i, (twice,
the first metallic Luxor metallic beige looked like an alligator skin set
of cowboy boots..the British Racing Green came out very well.. put in a
wiper motor, rebuilt the heater controller 'sword' , and changed the ATF
and gasket/filter and I'm putting a new set of front Bilsteins in the 735i,
as the 150k on them has reduced their damping..we'll see how liberal their
'lifetime' warranty is..they charged 1/2 price deposit on the replacement
set. said they would test the returns..

Cut out and repaired the rust on the 1/4 panel and door sill on the
325ic, and resprayed the repairs (Did you know there really is only one
color black for most black cars.. an easy match) and fixed the body hangar
for the muffler(broke at the weld on the spare tire tub..bolted a new
hangar on from a muffler hangar..came out slick) and installed a battery
master switch under the hood so I can shut of the power when it sits . I
think its getting the rest of the dings fixed, and a repaint in the spring,
and maybe a new top..I need to keep painting now that I figgered it
out..got a new HVLP gun for the first paint job and now I'm a painting fool..

Put driving lights on the the Suburban, changed the radiator and
alternator, pulled and adjusted the rear drums, rotated the rubber, put on
a new water pump, intake manifold gaskets, repainted the intake manifold
and rocker covers, replaced rocker cover gaskets and fuel injection
gaskets, new ignition wire set ,( BTW don't buy Accel Wires, the boots
started arcing and the warranty is only 1 year..POS stuff.. Napa Lifetimes
they just throw another set at you..) plugs and belt, wired a brake
controller and 7 pin connector for the trailer..that 9000lb dual axle
tractor/ trailer was truly scary with no brakes. Dug out and regraded the
driveway with said tractor....Oh yeah, changed the oil and coolant and fuel
and hydraulic filters..ever bleed a diesel injector..? ..in that 4wd 50hp
Ford tractor(may need to borrow it again .)

Repainted the front bumper cover/nose on the Roadmaster and installed a
set of FF75 Hellas (nice set nice wiring harnessBTW)so the old lady could
see at night.(couldn't really install driving lights on crusty clear coat
now could I?)

Put a new gimbal bearing and drive boots on the Wellcraft stern drive,
painted the bottom, touched up the topsides, repainted the drive ..(rebuilt
it and a friends as well last year) rebuilt the Rochester Quadrajet ..very
cool carb)
Rebuilt the starter on the 40hp Mercury on the whaler..(actually removed it
and brought it to the rebuild guy)

Pulled the # six cylinder off the airplane and ground the valves and
replaced it..only had 25lbs/80 at the compression leakdown test, got it up
to 65/80 cold on the retest..which is cool..( punched myself in the mouth
as hard as I've ever gotten slugged when I hit the ratchet release on the
wrench while tightening the cylinder base bolts..

Replaced the CV boot and cutlass bearing and drive shaft seals on my
buddies Duck tour Hydraterra amphibious tour bus/truck boat..

Put shocks, wires, ignition parts, plugs fuel, air,oil tranny filters and
fluid, waterpump, belt and coolant flush/hoses in my buddies Ford van
(bitch working in the doghouse..but he did give me $950.00

And built a couple of computers.

Painted the inlaws' summer cottage..( got to shoot a Glock (POS gun IMHO
much prefer the Sig Sauer...my ears are still ringing.inaccurate btw
couldn't seem to hit a quart oil jug at 50 fet, and I'm not really that
lame a shooter...) and a Carbon Fiber AR15 assault rifle with a Fiber optic
special forces sight (After dark with this one..scary accurate..BIG muzzle
blasts..) while I was up there in 'Deliverance country'.( What fun is
Alcohol without Tobacco and Firearms .... I don't smoke..but it is The
Bureau of ATF after all and we do smuggle Cubans in because the Canadian
border is right over the river..)
BTW Fear is when you see your six year old pull a .22 round out of his
pocket and chamber a round while the rest of the crew is downrange changing
targets.."Jake, hold still buddy..let me have that.... we'll talk about
this a little later" ...phew...no one else saw...)

Fun is when the bragging head rednecks' little sister kicks everyone's
butt in the .22 pistol shooting competition...(I was second, and she likes
me...)

Got to shoot a Chinese AK47 as well at another summer place...though once
again there was a young lady, .. a 17 year old southern belle debutante
type, who exploded all the target melons better than the rest of us..hope
her future husband never is overcome by the urge to complain about her
cooking.....or blows the "honey, does this dress make me look fat?" test...

I also got to remember how to do wheelies on a Suzuki RM 125 on the gravel
airstrip, after some beers, while wearing protective gear.. shorts and a
tee shirt ..and demonstrate them to my 6 and 9 year old sons..who were
driving a go cart at the time I passed them on the back wheel..some people
just NEVER learn..(you still do them the same way you did when you were
20...just pour on the gas, dump the clutch in second , spin the tire and
pull back.. It is important to never let the front wheel touch the ground
when you go through a puddle..style points here..don't want to set a bad
example for the boys..we have standards to uphold here..)

Put a new battery in my sis in laws car, and headlight and serp belt.
Put a new battery in at the Wal Mart parking lot (20 degrees Bubba) in my
ice skating instructors' car (those figure skaters have great a**es you
know..what would you have done?? Getting some free 'skating lessons' for
that one he he ..)

Changed the oil in all of these machines too a few times..

Just got done putting a head and exhaust gaskets and shear pins in the
ancient snowblower..gonna snow tomorrow ya know..

Found an Ice cream maker at the dump, made a bunch of coffee rum kaluaha
cookie dough ice cream,

Brewed a bunch of beer...kegs full... he he he..
Taught the 9 year old how to drink beer after skiing..

Didn't get it on with that Blonde stewardess with the boob job that tried
to get me back to her hotel room... ( David would you like to take me
home?....shit that was 2 years ago, and I'm SURE I'll regret that one when
I'm an old f*** on the porch at the retirement home..WHAT WAS I THINKING??
S****!!! What a numb F***) "Well Vern, I'm sure glad I didn't do that"
....."wouldn't want to have that memory in there now that I'm 87 and the
Viagra and 90 year old debutantes ain't doin it.".....NOT!! (do I sound
bitter?)

So I guess no one could call me totally unmotivated, but I'd still like a
5 speed to make cool revving noises and do power slides with in the 325ic!

I guess I need to find some hobbies..or get a life or something..You think
I could make this stuff up?

Hey Dave,

I started this conversion during my two-week
Thanksgiving break from school last year (2002).
After ordering some of the wrong parts, having some of
the parts take too long to get to the house, being
sent the wrong rear transmission crossmember (I was
sent one for a 4HP22, not a Getrag 260/5), not having
the clutch alignment tool, and performaing numerous
other flub ups on my part, I got the car on the ground
and driveable some time in January or February. Each
problem required me to drop what I was doing, go back
to school in a borrowed car, and make the 2-hour drive
back home a week or two later to resume the project.

Then, that night the shifting shaft broke off of the
outside of the transmission. I had to drive the car
back in 4th gear.

After waiting a week or two for my friend to bring a
junk yard replacement transmission from 5 hours away,
I swapped the transmissions and installed a new clutch
disc.

I wasn't completely finished and completely satisfied
with the job until March 4, which was when I took a
1000+ mile round trip, and I enjoyed every minute of
it!

The job ended up costing me just under $1500 in new
and used parts, and it took me exponentially longer
than it should have. Would I do it again?

Absolutely.

Taking into account all that happened, I would say
without a doubt that it was worth every penny and
every minute I spent on the job.

A friend -- the same friend that picked up the
junkyard tranny for me -- did a 5-speed conversion on
his '86 535i a few months later. His took quite a bit
less time, and I got to do the hard stuff for him,
lol.

I think if I had it to do again, it would take me
about a week, if that.

The job's really not THAT hard, but all of the things
that can happen really slow the process down!

Thanks for the play-by-play of your year!

Anyone else have a crazy year?

Larry,

The front Sport Bilsteins on our '95 325i are going on 8 years old with no
sign of wear (that I can detect). Certainly 2.5yrs/25k miles is abnormal.

The only difference between HD and Sport for e36 body Bilsteins are the rod
length (Sports are short). Valving is the same.

Do you have stock springs? If not, running HD Bils with sport/lowering
springs will quickly reduce their lifetime. I discovered this by initially
installing rear HD on our '95. This is with H&R Sport springs on all four
corners. The rear shocks wore out in 3 years due to bottoming I would guess.

car in heavy traffic to and from my office in DC any longer, bla bla
bla. It's an '87, daily driver, some go-fast stuff on it, nice car and
dead reliable.

I'm looking for a later E30 (not M3, unfortunately), prefer an 'is' 5
speed, under 120K, red or silver, thoughtful upgrades are good, plus
cash.

Please email me off-line for details. Car is located in Alexandria, VA.
