Thanks to all who responded to my call for help a couple of weeks ago with
my M20 engine idle problem. I had tried all the obvious candidates, and was
about to give up, but I received several good tips from list members. I've
cleaned out the idle control valve, and it seems to have done the trick!

I also cleaned the wiper pot in the airflow meter, that may have helped but
it looked really clean to start with. So I think it was just the ICV that
needed attention.

Gruppe,

After replacing the water pump in my mom's 3/95 525i (with A4S 310R tranny),
I went for a drive. About halfway into the drive, the dreaded Trans Program
on the dash was displayed and the tranny entered "safe mode." A quick cycle
of the keyswitch cleared it, but the fault quickly returned. I let the car
sit for several hours, but the fault was still there. I even disconnected
the battery for ~8 hrs with no help.
I've spent the last few days searching the net for any help. Bmwe34.net has
some good info, so I started to diagnose. I'm up to the point at which I
should either replace the pulse generator or not. I have not taken it to
the dealer yet. Since the generator is about $50, I don't want to replace
it for sh!ts and grins.
I removed and tested the generator with a DVOM (with analog needle) for both
resistance and continuity. Continuity test does 'make' the switch when I
get the magnet close. Resistance is a solid 28 Ohms until I use a shop
magnet to trigger the switch. When I do that, the resistance seems to
increase, but I couldn't be consistent with the magnet movement, so I set up
a harness to test it in car, and spun the back wheels by hand.
I've tried to spin the tire slowly enough to see where the trigger points on
the pulse wheel are, but I'm not having much luck. Next step is to spin the
wheels faster and monitor. Might even try to score an O'scope from work.

My question is this: The pulse generator seems to be just a hall effect
switch. Shouldn't it short when it is made (and the corresponding
resistance drop to zero)? Any body else go through this and check new
switch values?

Thanks for your help,

Andy

Are you referring to the pulse generator in the differential?

What is causing you to check that for a transmission fault?

Stephen, the rear sunroof drains exit through a plastic body fitting on the
quarter panels on each side of the car. Pull back the truck liner on each
side and you'll see them.

Subject: DAMAGED XENON lights/UPS problem...Please help
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Group,

Please see the website I created for UPS: http://www.inlacal.com/ups

Last month, I shipped a brand new set of Xenon lights (e39) to a customer in
Canada. Thankfully, I insured them. Subsequently, the lights showed up
broken with the box being (clearly) damaged and repaired by UPS.

UPS sent an investigator out to the customer and told the customer that they
(UPS) wouldn't honor my insurance claim because the headlights were
'improperly boxed and wrapped'.

There's no way in hell I sent the box this way (damaged and with UPS repair
tape on it).

I'd really like the advice from those of you who have been in similar
situations with UPS. Any help would be appreciated.

wow.

I may start photographing packages before I ship them to make sure I have a
record to prove it wasn't AFU.

After having similar failures with UPS, I have switched to using
Fedex exclusively. After nearly 50 packages, have no problems.

They might be claiming the box was not sturdy enough - it is hard to tell
from the pix but does have that "cheap green cardboard" look. I guess if
they think the box was not tough enough then it ripped let the packing peanuts
out which then let the lights get damaged? Also if it was re-used many
times it would not be as good as a new box.

I don't think they are claiming the UPS tape was applied by you are the
customer, just that they taped it up after the box ripped open.

Of course, you never know unless they say or you ask them.

In hindsight maybe wrapping the lights up in bubble wrap then embedding
them in packing peanuts might have been better. If the box was weak, then
use a stronger box.

We ship with box UPS and FedEx all the time, we rarely have a problem but
we KNOW they are really rough on the boxes. Waiting for a UPS claim payment
or COD payment can take a LONG time, however.

I don't know what their criteria is for crush or rip resistance, but you have
to expect some when you ship and pack tight and well.

Of course if they say the box was not up to specs then ask them why they
allowed you to use it :-)
