Hi all,
Here is something you never heard of
After idling for 1/2 hour(drying out after huge storm), my car is now
exhibiting a strange problem. It wont start UNLESS I---

hold the main relay contacts OPEN for a second(with a matchstick)
while engine cranks. Then, while engine is cranking I pull out the
matchstick, the contacts close and it starts right up. (I took the
top of the relay to do this.)

Normally the contacts close as soon as ignition goes on, I think.
But, what the car is doing for that second while its cranking over
and the relay is open i cant figure.

Dont ask how i figured out how to start it this way, it was some kind
of [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I tried replacing all the relays and have confirmed my relays are
working by putting them in another car, which starts right up.

-relays good
-cold start injector works nice
-battery strong
-no trouble lights on in dash
-starts and runs fine if I just hold those contacts open for a second
while starting.

apologies for cross posts or double posts, newbie

Yes, I have to say I never have heard that specific situation before. I'd have
to guess it's something with the fuel while cranking that is going wacky. Like
some sort of fuel pump/fuel pressure issue, OR cam sensor?

Just a couple thoughts.

Brian

Hello again,
Thanks for your response so far.
well it is below freezing here so cold start operation wouldnt cause
no start. I did try disconnecting cold start injector tho, no
difference.
also tried differentt ECU same thing, tried grounding pin 86 on Main
Relay, nothing.
I think I can smell gas if I crank it too long without doing my
little trick to start it.
What is the main relay powering when it goes on? What is it NOT
powering when I hold it open for a second?
Oh man, hour after hour goes by, trying this, trying that.
Which sensors can I try to fool instead of the main relay?
  arrgghhh
best Egards and thanks for any more suggestions any one can come up
with.

I have delt with a similar issue on 1 of these cars that was related to a bad
connection (corroded) in a harness plug on the drives side of engine below the
intake manifold - it would randomly open the injectors flooding the engine.

At roughly 1:20 (concentrate:water), the BMW blue stuff is good for 29F.

Roughly 50:50 is good for 0F.

At full strength, you don't have to worry until -60F. If it ever got
that cold in the Tri-valley, I'd think there would be bigger things
to worry about than a frozen windshield wash system.

It can also be used in other ways:

Of course, outside of a few selected counties, the State of Kali-
fornia says one must not go beyond 1:10 and exceed 9% VOC. I don't
think the other use depicted in the video would be approved either...

Hey, you asked!

Herman
