If anyone knows of a list of other E36 >"gotchas", I would love to take a look at it. Those of you here who own E46s likely already know, but RSM failures have continued into the E46 (since the design hasn't fundamentally changed since E30). Though I haven't heard about rear shock tower failures on E46s, the RSMs fail just as rapidly, if not worse, then on E36s. The factory ones in my 01 E46 wagon started failing about a year in, and the E46M3 'reinforced' ones went about twice as long. Because most of the rear interior of the wagon has to come out to swap the RSMs, much like a Z3 coupe, I didn't want to go through that yet again. So I installed <can't mention on UUC list> mounts utilizing their attach-from-wheelwell mod (pioneered by Ron Stygar, AFAIK). The mechanicals between E36 and E46 are so similar that most of the weaknesses in one will show up in the other. I plan to change the oil after some short (50 miles?) interval. Thoughts on which oil to use for the initial "sacrificial" fill? I'd rather not throw away 7 quarts of good synthetic if I don't have to...
