Any more specific word on...er...when you need to be ready to support

Howdy Folks :

aluminum block - will be sleeved - a very complex
engine - expensive to maintain - 2000.00$ dealer cost
to replace timing belt perhaps. wonder if BMW took any
"Q's" from VM on this - overhead cam will probably
mean less maintenance - no valve adjust - injectors
will be 1000. $ a piece - Id like to know longevity
of such an engine - 200,000Km - 400,000km ? perhaps
twin intercooled ? Dunno -- I really dig my 524 Tdi
- really a marvel of the times - considering what
most other Oil motors offered in 1984- only weak point
is the injection pump - for a mid 80's diesel was
quiet and fast - very un- diesel like - Mercedes and
VW are also supposed to re- enter the US market next
year with 50 State diesel options - If the Japanese
offer such an option ( Nissan is rumored ) pretty sure
America will adapt

Bad coolant leak from somewhere near the front of my motor (just began looking
at this a few min ago). System appears to be holding pressure with motor OFF
and car in the garage. Leaks bad with motor running. Coolant I found on the
floor when first noticing this was blue and clear. Drive around the block,
and what I have on the floor now seems to be colored with oil. There's a fair
amount of it too, it's leaking badly.

Water pump? But where is the oil coming from?

Got the fan & belts off. Still can't see where the leak is coming from... but
I was in error when claiming the system was holding pressure. Remove the cap,
and she starts to drip (steady stream, actually). Coming off the front of the
motor. Again, can't see the source.... but it HAS to be the pump... right?

Pump bearings have considerable play; I can shake the pump shaft with my hand
and get a fair amount of lateral movement. And it doesn't turn as smoothly as
I'd expect either.

Has to be the pump... right?

Sh*t..... now where can I get one overnight (to me on the east coast) at this
late hour.......... (this is my only vehicle with the missus traveling on
business, I'm stranded here at home).

Yes . We're all praying to our respective idols, gods and godesses that it
IS indeed the water pump . The atheists and agnostics are doing the
'anti-leaking' dance as we speak .
If you have removed some stuff from front of motor you can lie on your back
looking upwards with the lights out or the hood closed (to enhance
contrast ) with flashlight in hand and look at the bottom of the wasserpompe
where there should be a bleed-hole with a browny-greeny dried-on streak
coming from it . That is where the pump has been sending you visual signals
for months ...but you chose to ignore them . At which point it said
something like "P!$$ on you " and just let go. Time for der gnu pompe and
belts and coolant and hoses and radiator .......or give it a damned good
kick . Your choice !!

Thanks, Bill. Always fun to read your posts :))

Hoses are reasonably new, radiator is reasonably new, belts are reasonably new
(all within a year). Pump probably goes back to 2000-ish (first installed to
replace the feared factory plastic impellor).

The play on the shaft of this thing is incredible. Hard to believe it's
worked as long as it has (it's SHOT). Makes me wonder if my factory plastic
impellor pump would've done any better :O/

Parts are on the way (Pelican), should have them Wed. Bummer I didn't notice
this until 18:30 eastern... a few hours earlier, I could've had parts
tomorrow.

How did we EVER survive without the internet and overnight shipping.......

Jeff,

Besides the most excellent book suggestions, I'd also check out he 944 email
list and web boards at Rennlist.

If they don't have the answers, they'll point you in the right direction of
who does.

Subject: <E30> Timing Belt
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,
I am looking at rescuing an E30 convertible that has a broken timing
belt. I know this is an interference engine, but the seller thinks that
if the belt broke at low rpm or during start-up, the valves may not be
bent. Is this possible or is a broken belt a guarantee of bent valves?
Also, the car has 150k miles would it be reasonable to just repair the
head or should the whole motor be done?

The difference between the belt breaking at low rpm and high rpm is the
amount of damage. low rpm means it "only" needs 6 or 8 valves.
Breaking at high rpm means it needs an engine.

Looking for a pair of DSI's in good shape to replace a bent wheel and
a destroyed one (from my mystery noise disaster). One will be a spare
so any decent tire would be fine, but I will take tires or no tire,
whatever is available. Please let me know if anyone has something
they are looking to part with.

Thanks
