I've long wondered how one of these would be classed in a BMWCCA
autocross event. You'd want to enter because, of course, it has a BMW
engine.

There is a club for these. Don't google for "vixen club" though -
you'll find a different sort of club instead.

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but I went through 2
timing belts years back on an old Mitsubishi non-interference 4-banger.
Both times the belt broke during a downshift, meaning high RPMs until I
slowed down, hit the gas, and got nothin'. I figured the reason was
that a weak belt would snap under the condition of highest force: rapid
engine acceleration.
So if someone told me, "I think it just broke at idle or on startup," I
would be suspicious. Maybe I'm just the suspicious type.

But hey, if the e engines are more plentiful in the parts yards, drop
one in there. The convertible is still a great ride, and you'd have the
only 325ec!

Can someone tell me what other models share wheel characteristics with
the e39? specifically, 15x7, 18mm offset, 5-120 bolt pattern.
It might help me get rid of these extra wheels.

Thanks.

They will fit any E28/E24/E32/E34 (except M5) with hubcentric rings.

Thanks! Do you have any favorite places to acquire said rings, other
than googling for an online outfit?

Nothing. E39 wheels are unique.

E39 has the large car offset range (15mm-26mm) and standard
BMW 5x120 bolt pattern... but the kicker is the oversize
74.1mm center bore, larger than the standard BMW 72.6mm.
The only BMW that shares the 74.1mm bore is the 1st gen X5,
but the X5 uses the shallow offset range (35mm-45mm) that is
shared with E36/E46.

However, you can use E39 wheels with any
E24/E28/E31/E32/E34/E38 if you get a hubcentric adapter
ring. TireRack sells these for about $3 each, ask for part
number A670.

Not certain, but pretty sure it was the 16 valve motor.

We are talking Newton's laws here, Two items occupying the same space at
the same time.

If the particular VW engine was of an interference design, where the
valves work in the same space in which the piston travels, the engine
cannot turn over with no belt without valve damage.

An E30 six cylinder engine is clearly an interference engine and the
belt cannot break with the engine turning over, whether under its own
power or spun by the starter, without damage resulting to one or more
valves and/or the piston.

Just noticed today that my odometer has stopped. The speedo and
everything else works fine.

Is this mechanical? Expensive or difficult to repair? Where do I start
looking? BTW, it stopped about 2 weeks ago at 258,901. Now some other
things are probably going to start wearing out, too. :-)

TIA

The odometer gears turn into a kind of plastic goo after many years...its a
easy fix if you feel comfortable pulling the speedo out of the cluster so you
can replace the gears. I fixed our E30's odometer with a set of new gears
from http://www.odometergears.com and they work great. Probably the most
expensive lil bits of plastic you will ever buy at $65 (vdo) or $85
(motometer) but they are good quality and certainly fix the issue.

I need to do this exact work on my E24. The various pics of the
process look fairly straightforward. I think in my case it may be
harder to get the cluster out than actually replacing the gearset.

Might be worth mentioning to NOT lubricate these new gears either. :-P

At least that's what I remember hearing. :) I think I remember the old gears I
had removed in my old E30 having some sort of light lubricant on them, but I
don't remember for sure. Obviously no petroleum based lube should be used, but
maybe a silicon based lube might be beneficial (?).
