You'd want to enter because, of course, it has a BMW engine. There is a club for these. Don't google for "vixen club" though - you'll find a different sort of club instead. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 12:36:55 -0700 From: John Bolhuis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: <E30> Timing Belt Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> On Tue, Oct 23, 2007 at 10:53:26AM -0400, KMS- Brett Anderson wrote: > The difference between the belt breaking at low rpm and high rpm is the > amount of damage. low rpm means it "only" needs 6 or 8 valves. > Breaking at high rpm means it needs an engine. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but I went through 2 timing belts years back on an old Mitsubishi non-interference 4-banger. Both times the belt broke during a downshift, meaning high RPMs until I slowed down, hit the gas, and got nothin'. I figured the reason was that a weak belt would snap under the condition of highest force: rapid engine acceleration. So if someone told me, "I think it just broke at idle or on startup," I would be suspicious. Maybe I'm just the suspicious type. But hey, if the e engines are more plentiful in the parts yards, drop one in there. The convertible is still a great ride, and you'd have the only 325ec! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 12:40:52 -0700 From: John Bolhuis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Subject: what shares wheels with the e39? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Nothing. E39 wheels are unique. E39 has the large car offset range (15mm-26mm) and standard BMW 5x120 bolt pattern... but the kicker is the oversize 74.1mm center bore, larger than the standard BMW 72.6mm. The only BMW that shares the 74.1mm bore is the 1st gen X5, but the X5 uses the shallow offset range (35mm-45mm) that is shared with E36/E46. However, you can use E39 wheels with any E24/E28/E31/E32/E34/E38 if you get a hubcentric adapter ring. TireRack sells these for about $3 each, ask for part number A670. - Rob ----- Original Message ----- From: John Bolhuis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Subject: [UUC] what shares wheels with the e39? If the particular VW engine was of an interference design, where the valves work in the same space in which the piston travels, the engine cannot turn over with no belt without valve damage. An E30 six cylinder engine is clearly an interference engine and the belt cannot break with the engine turning over, whether under its own power or spun by the starter, without damage resulting to one or more valves and/or the piston. I fixed our E30's odometer with a set of new gears from http://www.odometergears.com and they work great. Probably the most expensive lil bits of plastic you will ever buy at $65 (vdo) or $85 (motometer) but they are good quality and certainly fix the issue. The various pics of the process look fairly straightforward. I think in my case it may be harder to get the cluster out than actually replacing the gearset. >Dave > >Search the ARCHIVES:http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] > > >__________________________________________________________________________ >In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. > >UUC Motorwerks - BMW Performance Fine-tuning and home of the Ultimate >Short Shifter - accept no substitutes! >908-874-9092 . http://www.uucmotorwerks.com Kazuto Okayasu Manager, Desktop Support Services Administrative Computing Services, University of California, Irvine [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2007 11:12:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Ruiz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Clarence <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: UUC Digest <[email protected]> Subject: Re: <E30> kaputt odometer Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Might be worth mentioning to NOT lubricate these new gears either. :-P At least that's what I remember hearing. :) I think I remember the old gears I had removed in my old E30 having some sort of light lubricant on them, but I don't remember for sure. Obviously no petroleum based lube should be used, but maybe a silicon based lube might be beneficial (?). .02, Brian 95 M3 ex 84 318 ----- Original Message ---- From: David Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Clarence <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: UUC Digest <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2007 7:38:53 PM Subject: Re: [UUC] <E30> kaputt odometer On Thursday 25 October 2007 6:36:32 pm Clarence wrote: > Just noticed today that my odometer has stopped.
