Ok, previously I'd asked about E46 323's and the comparison of that engine
to other M/S50 variants. Didn't get a lot of info ; ) but that's ok, I do
appreciate the responses. Now I'm not looking for a slushbox car, manual
only please. This would be a daily commuter for my wife so mods are not so
much a concern. I'm looking for an E46 323 or 328 (is there a reason to buy
one over the other?) in good shape. Must be a manual, no autos considered.
Color is not really important but I'd prefer a more subtle color like silver
or similar. Sport package is preferred but not required. Would MUCH prefer
the nonwood interior trim but again, not a requirement. Extra wheels with
snows is a big plus. Budget is around $9k. I live in Michigan near Detroit
but am wiling to travel for the right car, probably not west of the rockies
though.

Any leads or info is appreciated. Cheers.

Should be interesting to see what it does. Love the idea of that car...If I
was going to spend that kind of money on a 5 touring project, I would use
another color but green.

It would be nice to be able to change colors easily. After considerable
searching I just purchased a '97 528i 5spd with under 61k, from the
original owner. During my search, I found all sorts of nice-looking
automatics, different colors I'd love to have. When it came to 5spds I
found black....black....gray....black....and the one I got is.... Oxford
Green. It actually looks very nice....but very green. Oh well, those
of us who can't afford new get....green.

I was wondering the same thing....regarding E34 touring manuals. I see
plenty of E39 stick wagons, sport versions and non (if you ever see one for
sale, let me know, I need them all:-) but can't say I have run across an
E34 wagon manual.

I know of several people who've retrofited in a 535 stickshift drivetrain
into the E34 touring. Not nearly as heroic as what Brett does but the
owners seem to enjoy the results.

They were not made for the US market.

US got 530i V8 and 525i 6 cylinder, both with automatic.

Rest of world got manual trans option on many of the engine variants,
including the 540iT....

We've built a couple of 540iT 6spd cars, but it's as much money as this
V12 conversion, so why bother.

Subject: E30 Peculiar noise
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

OK, here is one for those E30 hold-outs in here...

I recently (last week) replaced my timing belt, tensioner, water pump,
alternator and power steering belts. All went well and the car runs fine,
but since the work I am getting a distinct noise or increase in noise once
the car warms up and the engine is at 2500 RPM or higher.

Let me put it another way... until the engine fully warms up, I have the
standard E30 engine noises nice and smooth all the way up and down the RPM
range. Once things are fully warm, I get the same standard noises, but there
is an abrupt step or change in the sound at 2500 RPM. It isn't a buzz, but
sort of a raspiness... it is hard to describe.

I checked all the bolts to make sure they were tight. I tried playing with
the accessories belt tensions (no change). I watched the timing belt at the
idler with the engine running and it seems to be tracking correctly e.g.
hasn't run off the front into the covers.

I did bleed the cooling system when I did the work and I have heat even at
idle, so I don't think it is air in the coolant, but maybe...

Anyone else ever run into this?

Chet,

It looks like swapping the +/- is a pretty simple task. Post #7 talks about the
wire change necessary and the part number of the +/- plate.

Kazuto,
Thanks, this confirms my thought that our two cars have the same transmission
despite 3 model years difference. (Based on build date)
It also means that I have no experience with the transmission Bill commented
on, but that Jack or any other potential buyer may want to check the build date
of said 323i.
I agree, the MT is the preferred transmission for most things. My wife tends
to argue that with a 2 year old in the back seat and dealing with Metro Detroit
traffic (but not anymore!) the auto has a significant advantage. Thus, we
don't have MT's in all the cars.

So how much work is it to swap the steptronic shift up/down to be consistent
with our two auto-trans cars?

Cheers,
Chet
