Honda make a product called shin-etsu grease.  From
the web:

"Genuine Honda shin-etsu grease, for lubricating
rubber door seals. Apply sparingly, a little goes a

After returning from vacation I find I'm in need of this stuff.  My
tube of gummi pflege is MIA and I was wondering if there was a
substitute that may be readily available in parts stores.  I know it
won't be as good but I have to do something about these frozen doors,
poor E39 had about 10 inches of snow and ice piled up on it after two
weeks.  :-/

About three weeks ago I wrote about an electrical gremlin that my E30
started showing. I got all sorts of good advice and then promptly left town
for the holidays. I got back to snow and then cold weather that made looking
into the issue uncomfortable if not impossible. 

Well, today it warmed up enough to go take a proper look. Luckily the 
intermittent gremlin became a fully developed fault while I was away. The
tach/econometer are completely inoperative, OBC doesn't even try, and the
radio will not retain its memory. After pouring though the ETK for the car I 
came to the conclusion that the fault must be a failed splice S319. That 
splice is fed from fuse 21 and runs the interior lights, glove box light, 
trunk light, tachometer/econometer, OBC, door chime, active check panel, and 
radio memory. Checking on the other items in the list showed them all
equally inoperative.

Now the fun. I looked for splice S319 right were the ETK said it would be.
There was a splice there, but there weren't enough wires in it... worse, it
was fine. Hmmm, maybe there is a second splice? No.. lets see... this feed
that, that goes over there... how does the wire get to the other interior
light? So I look over the harness diagram in the ETK and realize that the
wires in my car don't run the same way as the ETK shows. Somehow I shouldn't
be surprised.. this car seems to be some strange hybrid of non-US options
and parts. So I check the 1986 ETK. That looks like the routing I saw... and
S319 isn't in the same place. So I go all the way forward to the firewall,
wrestle the harness out and get a handfull of blue-green goop. S319, I
presume. I cleaned and respliced and all is well.

Now all I have to do is replace the plastic door sill trim piece. It was
just below freezing when I tried to pop it off. It didn't go well. 

So, what we have learned:

Electrical problems are a pain in the rear.

Just because the car was built in 1987 doesn't mean that they didn't use
1986 parts.

The OBC and tachometer/econometer need constant power and switched power to 
operate.

Half the car seems to be connected to fuse 21.

Was the car built in 87, or is it just an 87 year model?  87 E30 is one 
of the rule breakers, with production starting BEFORE the traditional 
9th month cutoff.  1987 E30 built BEFORE 9/86 should use the 86 ETM.

Because half the car has a need for memory (constant) power.  By routing 
it all through one fuse, it allowed that fuse to be pulled during 
transportation/storage of the new vehicle, resulting in longer battery life.

Part of the pre-delivery process of an E30 or E24 was to install fuse 21.

According to the sticker in the door jamb, the build date is January of
1987. So from what you say, the 1986 ETK is the one to use for this car. I
will have to go recheck some of the other electrical quirks I found to see
if the 1986 ETK clears up the confusion.

Like most things BMW, no matter how strange it may seem at first, there
seems to be a good reason for the decision.

My good friends in Bethesda MD, whom I helped get into Bimmers, have
just contacted me wrt the following:

"Low Coolant light went on, then off. When we got home we let the car
cool off and I checked the coolant level. It looked like there was
NONE, NOT A DROP, in the coolant reservoir!! So the manual says to
only use the right stuff, (not what the right stuff is, other than BMW
approved) but it is now Sat. eve and tomorrow is Sunday. Do you have
any idea if there is something I can put in to get me to the dealer on
Monday if I have to go there to get the "right stuff" or have them see
if there is a leak???"

Car is a current model 325it, auto. ( E90ish?). I know enought to tell
them definitely not to put in generic coolant, but is there another
brand that would be compatible? Of course, they have the BMW road
service so they can call and have the car flatbedded to the dealer if
all else fails. Or, could they assume that if the low coolant light is
not on, they can drive it. I would not think so....

Ideas?

Is there any way to replace the front bump stops without having to 
remove the strut assembly and then the spring?

I really hate to have to do all the same work associated with swapping 
suspension without actually swapping it.
What a buzz kill. 

I can see this quickly escalating from a $15 part replacement to a 
wholesale changeover to a coilover setup just because...

 air gun the big nut off
, jack up car, 
replace bump stop.

Assembly is reverse of previously mentioned steps.

I don't think this is OSHA approved, could be dangerous.
