Dunno how many of you get an O'Reilly Auto parts flyer in the mail and
simply throw it away (like I usually do !!) .......but , if you got one this
week take a close look at it . There are three or four different 'Specials'
in there touting different flavours of oil -including some full-synthetics
!!- where there is a FULL rebate for up to 6 quarts of oil ..a couple of
them pay for the filter too .
OK so it may not be "the" brand of oil that your rhinocerous has been fed
for yea many years , but hey guys and gallettes , free is free . Even if you
store the stuff until either the World runs out of oil or you rebuild your
motor and need to use it for that first critical 1,000 miles-then-change-it
scenario you WILL come out ahead .
Yes , the oil company gets to tie up a few of your hard-earned bucks for a
few weeks until the rebate comes thru (is that loan-sharking ? or Kiting ? )
but think of it as an nvestment in your cars future . Or stick the stuff in
your S O's car then you'll both be happy !!
Provided you know your own name and address to put on the rebate cards it's
gonna be FREE !!
Hmnn..lets see ...6 qts Quaker State full synth free
A gallon of Pennzoil for $3.99 (limit 2 gallons )
6 quarts of Valvoline full synth ..free
6 qts Valvoline Durablend ...free
Gold Eagle cetan booster ..Free
104 maximum octane booster ..free
Gallon of Castrol GTX plus oil-filter ..$8.99
BE SURE to have the shop do a separate bill for each one 'cuz you need an
original receipt to go with your rebate claim !! NO copies!
Total approx $14 for 34 qts of oil plus the two booster-cans ....Figure out
where you plan to put it when you have to cut labels off the jugs to get
your rebate.
Together we can drain the World's oilwells dry !!
Their price on rebated Mobil 1 doesnt match Walmart tho ' .....
Keep watching those pennies !!
Bill Proud , 37 yrs messing with oil changes !!

guess she's getting old. Can somebody tell me what is being measured that
causes this error to fire? And any recommendations for a good source for

There are two oxygen sensors on the cat, one in front, one in back. The
front sensor dithers with the engine fuel ratio dithering, about 3 times per
second. The catalyst stores oxygen so the rear sensor dithers at about 1
per second. When the rear sensor dither rate speeds up and matches the
front, the catalyst is considered bad.

I'm dealing with a similar code on the M3, and am probably looking at
needing a new one for the race car before the next smog check as well.
According to one of my local mechanics, the only really good replacement
cats are BMW ones. All the aftermarket ones pretty much suck, according to
him. They might last long enough to pass smog once.
My 2 cents,

Kevin,
AFAIK, the light is, well, lit, when the difference between the O2 sensor
readings before and after the cat vary too little (or too much, one of the two)
for (I'm guessing) an extended period of time or number of drive cycles.
No recommendations on a replacement source, though for a relatively newer car
like yours, I personally would go with OEM. I'm sure there are a few
aftermarket ones that work fine, but I've heard some bad stories from some
mechanics who have said that aftermarket units don't last nearly as long, or
fail to work properly to begin with, resulting in the purchase and replacement
with a new OEM unit anyway.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Are there two versions of the M50 intake manifold? I have one that has
the temperature sensor next to the throttle body, but the one on my
car has the temperature sensor on the underside of the manifold. I'm
wondering if the spare is actually from something other than an E36
325.

I just had mine swapped out but not sure about the temp sensor as I got it
from the installer of my Eurosport kit and didn't see the manifold prior to
installation. The 2.5 motor is the m50, then you have the m52 motors (2.8)
and the s50 and s52 (3.0 and 3.2 ltr respectively). Not sure what the
variation is on manifolds except that the s52 has the more restrictive one.

I doubt this will make it to the digest but from the ETK, there is only one
manifold for both E36 325 and E36 M3 3.0l, P/N 11 61 1735 727. Cheers.

By doing a general look up of E36 325 US models there is only one P/N
listed. By doing the same search for E36 M3 3.0l I get the same thing.
This is independent of build date so for 325's it would cover vanos and
nonvanos mdoel. So either the ETK is incorrect (my version is 1.1.0 3/02 so
it certainly covers the life span of the E36) or there are 2 different parts
with the same P/N (unlikely unless one superceded another) or it's from a
different model. I notice the M50 E34's have different P/N's so perhaps
that's it. Dunno. This is surely something that Brett knows. ; )
Cheers.
