It seems the problem happens somewhere later: when I am logged in as
admin, the template has no effect: no news are listed in the page.

Of course. It is used to display news (title, date and content). When
the user is logged as admin, it shows also an icon panel below the
content, to manipulate the individual page of the new:

Idea! The problem happens when I'm admin, so I deleted the whole [if
admin]...[if] of the template... and it works! It seems there's
something in that control panel that is causing problems with versions
newer than 2.37... maybe the customized images markup or maybe some
file permission issue in my system. I will investigate that.
