I was curious about how electromagnetic fields would effect my compact
flash cards so ran a test using a 64 Mb CF card. I copied some files onto
the card and then held the card against an electronic bulk tape eraser for
twenty or thirty seconds. I then put the CF card back in my mPower and
all of the files were still there and fully accessible. I even put it in
a card reader on my computer and ran scandisk on it to see if there were
any obscure errors caused by the high level magnetic field and the results
came back showing no problem with the card. I haven't tested a SD card
this way because I don't have a small one I am willing to sacrifice but
expect they would be equally invulnerable to external electromagnetic
fields so doubt the scanner equipment at the airport would be any problem.
I would be more concerned about them dropping or otherwise mishandling
the device or losing the small SD cards. Once, while going through
security a few years ago, they removed my Braille N Speak from my carry on
case and failed to put it back after they looked at it. The security
checker asked me to move on and out of the way of others coming through
security but I stopped right there and looked to see if they put the BNS
back in my bag in the correct protected location and found it missing.
When I asked where they put it, the security man said nothing but my
sighted sister-in-law, who was traveling with me, looked and saw that the
security man had put the BNS down on the shelf behind my bag instead of
back in the bag. Had I not checked, there is a good chance I would have
lost an expensive note taker. Let the traveler beware!

Hi Ann,
Wow, that's a long way.
Did you take flash cards with you and did you have trouble with
them after taking them through security?
Thanks,
Stacey
