Remember the golden rule: If you're doing the work yourself you have the
right to buy any tool you need.

Necessary tool for heater element removal: impact wrench!
Necessary for the rest of the plumbing: good high quality open wrenches.

I've a huge vise and 3+ foot wrench at home but couldn't get the elements
to budge. Impact wrench at local gas station gently twisted the element out
in about 15 seconds (they also had a huge vise), the hardened sealant came
out like toothpaste. Never used an impact wrench before and was utterly
amazed. Gas station had a large steel socket that fit snuggly and
there's was an air tool. There are corded impact wrenches that are supposed
to do a good job, I've not used one but am tempted.

Don't use impact wrench to install anything though.

I used write teflon on all threads and no leaks, maybe I was lucky. Sorry
about the blue gunk, that sounds like a bad situation. Its quite involved
to get everything back together, you'd be frustrated too if it leaks after
you're done.

Finally: I've always found the techs at wll to be very helpful. Not once
have they suggested I send my machine in.
