Jeroen:
When I said we should set up pro-Western client states, I was thinking
along the lines of what was done to Germany and Japan after WWII.
While Afghanistan will require a great deal of work to reach that
point, we could at least set up a government like in Jordan or Saudi
that refuses to allow terrorists to operate in its borders.
The trouble is that in order to do that, we will probably have to
construct a state in Afghanistan from the ground up. Afghanistan isn't
really at a state level of organization right now, and really never has
been. That makes things both easier and harder.
While the immediate need would be to create a government that poses no
danger to the West, the eventual goal would be to create a state that
can take its place alongside the rest of us, just like Germany and
Japan have outgrown occupation.
