Merely capturing/killing bin Ladin and rolling up his terrorist network
is not enough. What we must prepare ourselves for is a long war
against *all* terrorist organizations, not just this particular one.
These Islamic terrorist groups operate in a loose network of
organizations. There are core members, but also huge numbers of
"wannabes" and helpers who do not carry out attacks themselves, but
provide safe houses and intelligence to the terrorists.
The entire network of organizations must be destroyed, or the work of
the particular cell responsible for the WTC bombings will simply be
taken up by another group. And also remember that even if bin Ladin is
not connected to the WTC bombings, he is still responsible for the
Kenyan embassy bombing, the attack on the USS Cole, and many other
terrorist attacks.
The other thing to consider is degree of guilt. Terrorist cells
operate on a need-to-know basis. I'm sure that many of the people who
aided and comforted the hijackers during the planning stages had no
idea what the plan was. They were intentionally kept out of the loop.
What you don't know you can't spill. But, what sort of criminal
culpability does this level of agent face? They knew that some sort of
terror would result because of their help. I feel that they are just
as guilty as the people who flew the planes. Aiding and abetting
terrorism *is* terrorism. The entire network is guilty of the
conspiracy.
