Isn't the old conclusion "the coverup is worse than the crime" a direct
result from Watergate? It seems apparent to me that it was the tapes that
revealed the coverrup, ie the lieing, that finally damned Nixon.

Irrevelent because most Republicans don't believe that Reagan lied.
Sure, I know you believe that Reagan lied, but you probably also believe
that the indictments just days before the election weren't politically
motivated. At any rate, the Iran-Contra incident does not tell us how the
Republican Party treats liars because the facts in the Iran-Contra case are
in dispute.

Democrats on the other hand, are on the record on numerous occasions
explaining why lieing isn't important and is not a "high crime and
misdemeanor." I am unaware of a similar body of statements existing for
Republicans - which leads back to the inevitable conclusion - Republicans
are somewhat unusual in considering honesty to be an important quality in a
President. Not that Republicans insist upon 100% honesty, just that they
are unusual in considering it to be important.
