IIRC Bush flew either F-102s or F-106s for the Texas ANG. Although a handful were deployed to Vietnam for air defence, the aircraft was designed to be a bomber intereceptor in the event of a Nuclear War. Not really a front line fighter. Not really comparable to, say, George Sr., who flew Dauntless Dive Bombers in the tail end of WWII...
