The questions are ... 1) Should ByteWorks hand out e-mail addresses with the domain name @bworks.org to the kids? 2) If so, how should we assign e-mail address names? Currently, the kids get dial-up access with an e-mail account from the city (CIN). Since they don't get dial-up access until the end of the course that also means they don't get an e-mail account until the end of the course. That also means we don't teach e-mail until the end of the course. Recently through gmail, BWorks has the ability to create its own e- mail addresses with the @bworks.org domain. Since the gmail accounts are web-based, this would allow us to teach e-mail to the students earlier in the session and allow them to use these accounts from not only BWorks but from anywhere they have web access, e.g. the library or their school. If we do decide to hand out gmail addresses with the @bworks.org domain, how should we assign names? Currently, the city assigns them names: first initial + last name. So, John Doe becomes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Some options we would have: 1) use the same naming convention as the city: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2) use a different naming convention: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3) have the students choose their own gmail name: [EMAIL PROTECTED] My opinion: Yes, give them gmail accounts on the first day (we can always drop/ lock accounts for students that didn't go all the way through). The name will be the same as the city's as this will reduce confusion between the city's account and the bworks gmail account. If students want something more creative, they can get a gmail, yahoo, lycos, or hotmail account on their own. I have no problem letting CIN do the thinking for me. Thoughts?
