Where'd you get that info, Phlip?
I'm happy to report that game leads are (usually) not rock stars. And
as far as I know, they're not exactly hired based on the size of their
fan base (or their egos). There are exceptions, yes. But it's not the
rule. Tech leads are hired based on technical skills. Game Design leads
are hired based on their understanding of game play. Art leads are
hired based on their artistic skill.
Each of these fields have exceptional talents. Those guys happen to
have fans, but most of them are decent enough people that it doesn't go
to their heads.
It's also completely untrue that the rest of the team doesn't get
credit. Yes, they're not listed as prominently. But as long as you're
going with a credit roll, /somebody/ has to come first. (It's usually
some executive, not the lead programmer, by the way)
The game industry is the one branch of the software industry that's
pretty good about giving credit - pretty much everybody involved in the
project gets mentioned in the credits.
