Square CEO Yoichi Wada went on record today to discuss the company's plans to adjust
financial projections for the year.
While Square initially anticipated a net profit of 800 million yen ($6 million) for
the year, Wada-san said Square now
expects losses due to their feature film 'Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.' While exact
figures weren't disclosed, Wada-san
revealed that Square anticipated box office earnings from the film to exceed $80
million in America. Unfortunately for
Square, actual earnings leveled off at about $30million. Moreover, he revealed that
the film wasn't as well received in Asia
as expected. Perhaps most disappointing, Wada-san reaffirmed that Square has no plans
to produce any more films. Rather, the
technology acquired for the development of 'Final Fantasy: Spirits Within' would be
contracted for use on other Hollywood
films.
