I don't think they had buses in Franklin's time period.  But more
seriously, I think killing was just as or more rampant then; especially
compared to America today.
Franklin lived, according to google, from 1706-1790.  During that period
some of, but not all, the conflicts that waged were: Seven Years War,
American Revolution, Franco-American War, and your random acts of violence
to secure food.  You can't tell me the world, as a whole, was less violent
then.
