I remember reading an article about him in which Yusuf Islam (Cat -
also not his birth name) was quoted as saying "I wouldn't ruin his
meal if I saw him in a restaurant, but he deserves to die." I'm
paraphrasing because I don't have the article in front of me.
Personally I think death is a bit harsh a sentence for writing a piece
of fiction intended to entertain the masses - in interview on public
radio Rushdie said the thought of his being in hiding for a decade was
unfathomable when he wrote it. Given his fame (and -- even after
giving up his fame as an American folk singer because he felt it was
in conflict with his new-found beliefs [which incidentally, he found
largely because he didn't understand rip-currents], he's gone back to
singing and iirc become somewhat popular again), I think he's a
deranged and dangerous man. Too bad -- he produced some of my favorite
music.
