I've been amazed at the resistance to plastic corks in the industry. I remember 
an editorial in Wine Spectator in 1999 or thereabouts that specialty bottlers  
should allow buyers to choose their cork types and let the market decide 
whether it was time to try the new-fangled invention. The letters he was sent 
did not quite agree.

That may not be as much a joke, as I believe you meant it to be!

There is a lot of tradition to overcome. But, slowly, screw tops are being 
accepted as a superior method over corks; as well as the ever increasing 
rareness of cork producing trees.
