When I was last in Paris the wine shop dude told me nobody in France
drinks Merlot. It's crap! He actually got mad when I asked for it. I
always preferred the dryer Cabernet anyway but my wife liked Merlot
and it's usually cheaper.

Any thoughts on this, was he way off?

Memories, the shop is on Rue Mouffetard, my favorite street in Paris.
