this is absolutely true! My personal "house" wine is Domaine De Couron Cotes du Rhone it sells at the wine shops in my area for around $10.99 but is usually available at the state liquor stores (Washington State) for $6.87 It is a great wine and a great value. I generally buy it by the case. This weekend I am going to a tasting that will feature this vintner and I will get to sample his Cotes du Rhone Village for 2002, it sells for $11.99, last year's was very good, but I won't be making a purchase before I at least have a taste. One of the great misunderstandings about wine is that it has to be expensive to be good. Taste a lot of wines, start cheap and work your way into a price range you're comfortable with. Taste lots of different kinds and lots of vintages if you can. Erika recommended a Merlot earlier, personally I don't like Merlot (i think it's played out) but I would not discourage you from taking her recommendation and trying it. You might like it! If you do, good for you! Buy lots of different Merlots in different price ranges, record what you like (or don't like) about each.
