As far as I know, all mainstream Protestant denomiations are based on a "Faith Alone" doctrine. I've heard it both ways for Catholicism - Faith+Works will be you to Heaven.
However, James does say that faith is dead without works, but it's not the works that get you to Heaven there - it's the faith. That is to say that a person who, at the minute he dies, repents and professes faith, will get to Heaven. If works are necessary, he can't get there. That's why Protestant religions have a "Faith Alone" doctrine.
