I think there is another use for unions that still exists though... and that's 
to equalize jobs.  They ensure that employee A in one location is treated 
equally and fairly for the same job that employee B does in another location.  
It sets and maintains standards for the position as well.

Doesn't mean that it does those jobs well... but that's one of the intentions.
