Ok, here is the full long version of how I really feel about this all.

In WW2 we seized countries, imprisoned huge swaths of the population and
put them through training (de-nazification) in order to have them give
up their previous belifs. In Japan we realized that they thought they
were all ready to die, so instead we nuked them. Those two bombs, it's
estimated, saved a million American lives that would have been lost in
the invasion of the home islands.

Fast forward.

In Afghanistan I think that the whole provincial reconstruction idea,
given enough resources, will work. Iraq however is a different story.
These people were indoctrinated to a way of life under the Hussein
regime. Simply handign them the reins and askin gthem to do the right
thing hasn't worked, because they don't know what the right thing is,
telling them what the right thing is doesn't work because of the arab
macho/cnspiracy attitude. We need to make them see so much horror, so
much pain, that they don't want to fight ever again.

Japan has pacifism written into their constitution, they never want to
see war again. That's what we need.

If we keep down this path, your kids won't be in Iraq, but they'll be
fighting an even bigger Al Qaeda somewhere else.
