Where were you spitting the sunflower seeds? And was the meeting one where you were supposed to lead the discussion or was it with clients? If not, then no, its not rude. I dont' think its disgusting either unless you spit the seeds in his lap or something.
Perhaps because he is a web developer he doesn't understand that you could be capable both? If he is your equal then dont' worry too much about it. If you background is more designy you could give him the quick rundown and explain that you are so fortunate to be able to do both. I suspect you make him insecure so he acts like a weenie. There is one in every workplace.
