The "poor person too lazy to work" is mostly a myth perpetuated by
politicians who scapegoated the "welfare moms" to cover their own
incompetency.

There are people in the system for several generations who have the
mentality of entitlement because that is all they have ever known, but
given a true opportunity to work most will. There are, of course,
other factors, such as drugs and lack of education, but those people
are a very small percentage of the people who receive public
assistance.

I married young, and my husband came back from Vietnam addicted to
drugs. He eventually disappeared, leaving me with two small children
to raise. I had a choice - go on welfare, or go to college. I chose
college, and managed to raise my children with no welfare help. For
years, I resented those women who went on welfare, and were "living on
my tax dollars". But then I decided to research the real data behind
that stereotype. It was quite an eye-opening experience.

It still bugs me when I see a woman on the news wailing because she's
homeless with four kids. I want to yell "birth control", but in
truth, her appearance is more about the media exploiting the
stereotype than her being representative of reality.
