This is a problem with arguing through example. Honestly, I can't say
that I know the statistics these days and research in this area tends
to be biased one way or another, so it is difficult to come to good
numbers.

I'm in favor of trying to deal with loopholes and make the system work
as well as we possibly can. But I'm also of an inclination to give the
benefit of the doubt poor to people because, well, they need it. I
admit a lean to the easily disenfranchised. It's kind of like with the
death penalty...I'd rather we have a couple people screw us over than
put a couple people out to flap in the breeze who really don't deserve
to. This is an area where a little bit can make a huge difference to
individuals. I believe that people abuse the system. But I think that
the system is more important than the abuses. Do what we can to curb
the abuses, but don't curb its successes.

I hated the welfare system. Hated it. Despised it. I can think of a
hundred ways to reform what it was then (this was the 80's). Sadly,
the 1996 "reform" law had little to do with that. And I will hold
Clinton in contempt for signing that law for the rest of my days. So
I'm not against reform, nor do I think that we need to just turn a
blind eye to the situation at hand. But I think that we need to make
sure to take care of the least and not demonize the poor as a first
measure and then do our best from there.
