I used to think that too. Then I saw the financial collapse coming and realized that's all government should be for albeit only for the big things: * Saving for retirement * Regulating markets * Healthcare regulation If we got out of the business of protecting people from their own stupidity we wouldn't be talking stimulus. We'd just let everyone suffer and hope they learned their lesson. The truth is, as a people we don't tolerate watching people suffer or die even if it's due to their own stupidity.
