and therefore were getting these extremely efficient appliances.   
Sure, they're more efficient than previous models, but how much more  
efficient would they be if there were some standards in place.

I still maintain that if you let the consumer dictate the efficiency  
of appliances it will go nowhere, afterall, when I go to lowes.com and  
look for refrigerators, the only efficiency filter I get on the web  
site is Energy Star rated or not.  Yet, I can filter by any color, any  
brand, any capacity, and any price.  That tells me that efficiency  
isn't something that's sorted by very often.
