I agree with you.  I also hope that we do not have permanently diminished freedoms.  
However, I think that most Americans would
sacrifice a bit of freedom in order to live safely.

I remember going to Germany once and seeing the soldiers with machine guns and German 
Shepards at the airport.  At that time (1991)
it made me feel a bit uneasy (although I've always questioned the security at our 
airports).  However, I find armed personnel at
airports make me feel more secure now and it just goes to show that times change and 
we all need to either evolve and take action or
lose everything in the end.  It's sad, but true, that there are many people that are 
challenging our way of life and the very
existence of our country and we can's sit by and watch it happen.
