on the same track? That is EXACTLY how transitions should be handled
IMO.
It should also happen AFTER effects (such as color balance, denoise,
etc) are applied to that clip. I think you just mentioned that in a
previous email.
Why do video editors insist that transitions should be on 2 tracks?
I've used cinelerra for years ( more than 10) now and just recently
switched to KDenlive. Cinelerra has been left to rot this past year
it seems. I don't use effects (except for color balance) and have
very few demands on a video editor. It should just cut tracks one
after the other and be able to add sound on separate tracks. However,
to do even that, I have to transcode 3 times.
I first have to transcode my original videos (I hate doing this as it
seems so unnecessary), then edit it and render it to some
intermediary format. Then, encode with external software
(gmerlin_transcode) to get it into a usable mp4 container.
Cinelerra used to allow me to edit my videos without initially
transcoding them. It no longer does. Kdenlive will work okayish
if I transcode at the beginning. However, despite it;s lame MLT
backend and its overall wonkyness, I can make a usable mp4 right out
of the kdenlive editor. Instead of 3 transcodings, I now only have
2.
I dream of a day when I can edit in linux straight from my original
source to the encoded format. Bcast2000 did this way back when. Of
course, the acceptable codecs have changed since then. Cinelerra and
Kdenlive LOOK like they can do it, but can't because of quirky bugs
that show up. Just playing and encoding video from and to somewhat
standard codecs (x264 mov and mp4s) should be considered the bare
minimum.
If I had a year to commit to it, I would simply gut cinelerra, bind
its media rendering and media encoding to gmerlin/gavl and viola!
Of course, as a programmer, I can say with some authority that it is
much easier to dream and say than to program.
