My girls get 1/2 cup per day of Innova. They maintain a good weight of
around 17.5 lbs on this much. I feel no guilt feeding them so little, but
I would feel very guilty letting them get overweight contributing to heart
problems. I'm not being critical and completely understand how this can
happen. However, I really think that many vets overestimate what a dog
should weigh. I occasionally keep a Cavalier for someone, and she is young
and quite obese. The last time they brought her, they told me to give her
a certain amount of food per day, plus quite a few fattening treats as well
as chicken!

When they picked her up, I told them that I just hadn't been able to do as
they instructed, and that their girl had been fine eating the same amount
as my girls. I told them she didn't beg for treats and seemed perfectly
satisfied. I also told them what Dinah and Madeleine weighed, and they
about fainted. Their daughter finally said, "Mom, I'll bet Abby weighs
about twice what Madeleine and Dinah weigh." They went home saying that
they would continue what I had started. I haven't seen her since, but
hopefully the next time she will be nice and trim!
